Would I benefit more with the schools health insurance options or private insurance?
I teach іn texas аt FWISD. Im рlаnnіng tο gеt pregnant аnd tο upgrade tο thе best health insurance option. Thе deductibles mу district provides аrе very high-around 3,000 wіth monthly payment οf $170 per month. Whаt аrе mу options wіth private health insurance?
Group insurance policies, such as those negotiated by your place of employment, are always cheaper than private policies. If you want to explore your options, contact a local insurance agent – different policies are available in different parts of the country, and vary also by your current health conditions.
“Group insurance policies, such as those negotiated by your place of employment, are always cheaper than private policies.” This statement is absolutely false. Group insurance costs 2-3 times that of private policies and would only generally be cheaper than private insurance IF the employer was contributing. That’s why COBRA is thought to be expensive. COBRA is the cost of the group insurance without the employer contributing.
In your case though, you’ll have a hard time finding an individual plan that covers maternity in Texas. Paying $170 per month and having maternity coverage for a $3000 deductible is pretty good.
Because of healthcare reform your options with private health insurance covering maternity are limited to one plan in Texas and will cost you more than you’re currently paying because the employer will not contribute anything to the private plan. Stay where you are.
For pregnancy, in Texas, there is ONE insurance company that sells maternity benefits still. Coverage costs about $200 a month, has a 90 day wait before conception (any pregnancies that occur before 90 days into the policy, are NOT covered), and it has a $5,000 deductible.
And it’s a MATERNITY ONLY policy.
You’re not going to beat the coverage you have through your employer.
