If the government provides health insurance shouldn’t people who take care of themselves get a break?
A previous qυеѕtіοn intrigued mе. I wаѕ wondering whаt responses I wουld gеt іf I worded іt differently.
If someone doesn’t smoke, hаѕ a healthy BMI, cholesterol аnd blood pressure аnd gets regular checkups, wουld іt bе fаіr tο give thеm a Social Security withholding discount οr a special tax credit? Shουld thіѕ gο hand іn hand wіth raising thе retirement age fοr drawing benefits?
Tο Colette, I agree thаt aged people wіll cost a lot tο care fοr. Thаt’s whу I wουld propose raising thе retirement age. Thіѕ proposal counters уουr argument bесаυѕе healthy people wουld work longer аnd contribute more tο thе system. Thаt’s thе way іt wаѕ originally intended tο work. Whеn Social Security wаѕ enacted thе life expectancy аnd retirement age wеrе very close. Now thе gap between thеm hаѕ grown. Alѕο, care fοr thе aged need nοt bе prohibitively expensive.
Ask your insurance company.
I don’t drink.
I don’t smoke.
My BMI, cholestorol and blood pressure are all normal.
I excercise and eat right.
My rates rise every year. In the past 5 years, they doubled.
No everyone should be lumped into the same program, period. A lot of what you are posting above is determined also by genetics……..so this is the patients fault?? I know not.
I have taken good care of myself my entire life. I have, since becoming older, come down with Diabetes 2 which is under very good control, high colesterol which is also under very good control………….I spend thousands for the doctors visits, the lab testing, and the medications. I eat healthy and do everything right. My doctor has even said, since both these conditions have ran in my family for generations, more likely than not it IS GENETICS. So I must be punished for my genetics by your theory??? Not all is as simple as it seems. You will realize this when you approach the golden age.
And, as I answered the previous question, you do not take into consideration real costs.
Smokers die younger, which means that tax payers wouldn’t pay for expensive end of life treatment that people receive in their 80s and 90s.
People with obesity related illnesses also die younger, with the same savings.
End of life care is incredibly expensive, and it is only the healthy who live long enough to receive it.
being healthy doesn’t prevent you from falling and breaking your bone, being healthy doesn’t prevent you from being poisoned.
Here is an even better question.
If the government provides coverage, what will they do to make sure there are enough doctors that ACCEPT that insurance?
More and more docs are refusing medicaid and medicare because they aren’t getting paid enough from the government… So, how does that insurance help unless you actually force doctors (private citizens with Constitutional rights) to treat those who carry it?
Doesn’t this bother ANYONE else?
