On April 1, a new law in Canada (the ‘Juana Tejada Law’) will make sure that your host family has to pay your health insurance of the first 3 months. It should be around 150 CAD I think.
You can read more about the new law on the website of the Canadian Caregivers Association here: http://www.live-in.ca/post.php?id=4.
New law that is being enforced on April 1 2010 – that all caregivers/nannies legally need health insurance when entering Canada.
New Law:
Health Insurance
Employers of foreign live-in caregivers are now responsible for paying for their caregiver’s health insurance at no cost to the caregiver until he/she becomes eligible for provincial health coverage. Employers are not permitted to recoup these costs from live-in caregivers.
