AARP: comfort for old ages
With 35 million members, AARP is the leading nonprofit membership organization for people age 50 and over in the United States.
AARP is the short for American Association of Retired Persons and it has been the first name to cross someone’s mind when it comes of providing services for aged people. The requirement in order to become a member is to be 50 years old or older.
It is not necessary for people to be retired. In fact, 44% of AARP members still work either part time or full time. It is not necessary as well to be an US citizen. The AARP has about 40000 members who are not Americans.
History of AARP
The American Association of Retired People started from the development of NRTA (National Retired Teachers Association), which was founded in 1947 in order to provide care to retired teachers.
This was an initiative of Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired school principal. Dr. Andrus started the NRTA after noticing that private health insurance was almost unavailable for older Americans.
In order to solve this lack of service for older people, Dr. Andrus approached some insurance companies hat were willing to take the risk of providing health insurance for old people. She developed programs and services to help old people.
As time went by, people started to ask for information on how to become a member without being necessarily a retired teacher. Ten years later, after hearing so much of people who weren’t retired teachers and wanted to become a member, Dr. Andrus realized that something had to change.
In order to accomplish this change demanded by the people, in 1958 the NRTA evolved to AARP. This way, no matter if you are a teacher or not, retired or not, you can become a member. The requirement that exists is: people who want to become a member must be 50 years old or older. Only this.
Some years later, in 1963, Dr. Andrus established an international presence. She made this by founding the Association of Retired Persons International (ARPI). This establishes offices in Lausanne, Switzerland and Washington DC.
This is just a brief overview of AARP. You should know the benefits of it.
