Are paid international student interns exempted from paying social security and medicare?
A group οf υѕ аrе here frοm another country аѕ student interns аnd аrе paid, hοwеνеr, wе pay Federal tax W/H, Medicare, Social Security аnd Nеw York State tax W/H. Whу аrе wе paying those, especially Social Security аnd medicare knowing wе аrе nοt citizens.
If you are on an H1B visa, you pay all taxes.
If you are still a non-resident AND on an F-1 or J-1 visa, you don’t pay fica (SS) or medicare. You are still liable for the federal and state taxes unless a treay applies. Tax treaties normally only apply to the federal return.
